A label on a screenshot, a line on a photo before it goes out, the top and bottom text of a meme: open the picture, type, drag the words where they belong and download. Everything happens inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, there is no account to create, nothing to pay, and no watermark on the result. The picture keeps its original width and height.
On a photo with light and dark areas, a single-colour caption always sinks somewhere. An outline separates the letters from whatever is behind them. Here the outline is drawn first and the letters are filled in on top, so the outline frames the letter instead of eating into it, and heavy type keeps its weight. White text with a black outline reads on almost anything.
| For | Font | Outline | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| A meme | Impact (for memes) | Black, thick | Readable even as a thumbnail; the Meme button sets it up |
| A social post or announcement | Sans-serif | To match the background | The message comes first |
| A quote | Serif | Thin, or none | Quieter, like print |
| A note on a screenshot or diagram | Sans-serif | White on a dark picture | Points at the detail without hiding it |
It opens JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and HEIC/HEIF, one image at a time, up to 50MB. A JPEG is saved as a JPEG and keeps the print resolution (DPI) recorded in the original; everything else is saved as a PNG, and a note above the Download image button tells you before you save. An animated GIF or WebP comes back as its first frame. Opening another picture clears the captions on the current one, and the page says so when there were words to lose.
Tick Vertical text to set a caption top to bottom, with lines running right to left, as Japanese and Chinese are often written. Long-vowel marks and brackets are turned to suit vertical setting, and small kana and punctuation are moved to where they sit in a vertical line.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The text is drawn in your browser, on your own device. Neither the picture nor the words you type are sent to a server; there is no upload endpoint to send them to, so there is also nothing to delete afterwards.
Can I make a meme?
Yes. Open a picture and press "Meme": two captions are placed, "Top text" and "Bottom text", in a heavy typeface with white letters and a thick black outline. Type over them and download. The typeface comes from the fonts on your device, so the details look a little different from one device to another.
How do I keep the text readable on a busy photo?
Give it an outline. The outline is drawn around each letter before the letter is filled in, so the text stands out on light and dark parts of the picture alike. White text with a black outline is the safe choice.
How do I move the text, or add more than one line?
Drag the text on the preview to put it where you want it. Press "Add text" for another caption; there is no limit to how many. Each caption has its own font, size, colour and outline. Where two overlap, a press picks the one on top.
Will the picture lose quality?
A PNG is saved as a PNG, so nothing changes except the text you added. A JPEG is saved as a JPEG, which means it is compressed again and the areas without text can change very slightly. WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and HEIC are saved as PNG, so the file extension changes; a note above the download button says so before you save. To get a WebP back, run the result through the image converter. The picture keeps its original width and height either way.
Does a JPEG keep its print resolution (DPI)?
Yes, when a JPEG goes in and a JPEG comes out. The text is drawn on the picture at its own size, so no pixels are added or removed, and the DPI recorded in the original (in the JFIF header or in EXIF) is written into the new file. A 300dpi scan with a caption still drops into Word or InDesign at its original size. A JPEG that recorded no DPI has none to keep.
Does it work on an iPhone or an Android phone?
Yes. It runs in the browser, so open the page, tap the box to choose a photo, and download the result. HEIC photos from an iPhone open as well; since this tool writes only JPEG and PNG, they are saved as PNG.
Can I add text to an animated GIF?
Not and keep it moving. The text is drawn on a single still frame, so an animated GIF or WebP comes back as its first frame with the text on it, and the page tells you when a moving file comes in.
Can I curve the text, or use my own font?
No. Text runs in straight lines, across or down. The three typefaces (sans-serif, serif and a heavy Impact-style one) are taken from the fonts already on your device; the page does not load fonts of its own, and you cannot add one.
To hide a face or a name before you post, use theblur and pixelate tool; to change the file format, theimage converter; and to make the file smaller, theimage compressor. All three run in the browser too.
