MamePress removes the background from a photo with a machine-learning model and hands back a transparent PNG. What sets it apart is where that happens: the whole job runs inside your browser. Unlike remove.bg and most online background removers, it never uploads the image to a server, so a product shot, a confidential slide or a family photo stays on your device. There is no account to create, nothing to pay, and no watermark on the result.
Removing a background means cutting the subject out of a photo and saving it as an image whose background is transparent — a transparent PNG. Because nothing is behind the subject, it can be placed on another background, a slide or a banner without the original rectangle showing. Logos, icons, product photos and avatars are the usual reasons to want one.
Most background-removal sites do this by uploading your picture to their servers. MamePress instead loads the AI model into your browser and runs it on your device. The image is never sent anywhere, which is what makes it safe for photos you would not hand to a third party. It also means there is nothing to install and no account to open.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI that removes the background runs inside your browser, on your own device, and the image never leaves it. There is no upload endpoint to send it to. What does get downloaded, once, is the AI model itself: about 44MB for Standard quality and about 88MB for High quality. The very first time you open the page it starts on High quality, so if you drop an image without changing anything, the 88MB one is fetched. To keep it to about 44MB on a phone, choose Standard under Quality before you add an image. The quality you pick is remembered on this device, and each model is kept on the device after its first load, so working at the same quality again uses no data.
Is it free? Is there a limit?
It is free and there is no account. The list holds up to 10 images at a time, and that cap is on the whole list, not on a single drop. Download what you have, press Clear, and continue with the next 10, so there is no limit on the total. There are no credits, no monthly quota and no watermark.
Which images and formats work?
It works best where the subject has a clear edge against the background: people, products, animals, logos. It reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and HEIF, and GIF, so a photo straight off an iPhone can be dropped in as HEIC without converting it first. An animated GIF is read as its first frame; the animation is not kept. Each file can be up to 25MB. A larger file is skipped, its name and the reason are shown on screen, and the image compressor on this site will bring it under the cap.
Can I put a white (or any other) background behind the subject?
Yes. Transparent is the default, and one click paints in white, black, green or blue. Custom opens a colour picker and a field for a colour code, so a brand colour or a keying colour can be typed in as #RRGGBB (a three-digit code like #39f works too). The custom colour is remembered on this device; which swatch you had selected is not, so the next visit opens on Transparent. Once a colour is painted in, the output can be PNG or JPEG (PNG by default). JPEG is written at quality 0.92, which favours the look over the file size, so if you need it smaller, run the result through the image compressor afterwards.
What about hair and fine edges?
The AI finds the outline on its own and is good enough for most photos. Wisps of hair and translucent or semi-transparent subjects are where it can fall short. The page has a brush for that: Erase paints away background it left behind, Restore brings back subject it removed, and you can zoom in while you work.
What is a transparent PNG?
A PNG whose background is transparent rather than a colour, so it can sit on any other background, slide or page without a rectangle around it. This tool writes a transparent PNG by default. Only when you paint a colour in does the format become a choice between PNG and JPEG.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It is a web page, so it runs in Safari on an iPhone and in Chrome on Android with nothing to install. Pick a photo, wait for the cut-out, and download. HEIC, the iPhone's default format, is read directly.
How is this different from remove.bg and similar sites?
The difference is where the work happens. Most online background removers upload your image to their servers and do the work there; this one downloads the AI model to your browser and does the work on your device, so nothing is uploaded and the result comes back at the original resolution. There is also nothing to sign up for, no credit to spend and no watermark on the output.
